On the 29th of April 2015, the Board of Directors of Radio City Association Ltd sold the facility based in Kilbirnie to its main tenant Aspire Scotland Holdings Ltd, this has been agreed at market rates and done in consultation with the Charity Bank and the Big Lottery, which both held financial interests in the facility. The facility, a former cinema, which sits at the heart of Kilbirnie’s town centre was transformed from a derelict state and opened as a Healthy Living Centre in 2004 with support from a broad base of Public, Private and Social Partners. During its 11 years of operation the facility has transformed the lives of many of its patrons with a range of Wellbeing and Fitness activities, and wider Economic, Social and Leisure activities from business start up support, to traditional music groups and the operation of a local radio broadcast group. The centre has also delivered a range of employability services and in recent years has developed an effective partnership with CEIS North Ayrshire, assisting local people into training and employment opportunities. Aspire Scotland has grown to become a major provider of be-spoke care and educational services and has operated successfully from within Radio City for five years, and now employs 72 staff across its services.
The change of ownership is supported by a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations which will continue to promote the facility as a Community Hub and sustain access to facilities for local people. Gordon McGuinness, Chair of the Association added, “Like many businesses we’ve found the economic conditions of recent years very challenging and as public sector partners’ priorities have changed and funding reduced, grant aid and contracts to support activity have become more difficult to secure, in addition to this increased overheads have made for difficult trading.” He added “This is a positive outcome, sustaining the facility for the community, enabling a progressive company like Aspire Scotland to grow and allowing Radio City Association Ltd to concentrate efforts as a Charitable Trust to secure new investment in pursuit of our charitable aims and development ambitions. The Board would like to thank our supporters for all their assistance through the development and operation of the facility and we look forward to delivering further positive change across the community”
